What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is one of the most widely used forms of medicine in the world today and it is used by millions of people in the UK alone. It is a gentle yet highly effective system of medicine which is based on the principle that ‘like treats like’ i.e. a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. It was developed by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, in 1796.
Homeopathy recognises the connection between mind and body. It is a holistic therapy – it takes the whole person into account and treats the whole person rather than an isolated condition. Homeopathy recognises that no two people are the same. We are all individuals and every disease affects each of us in our own individual way. That is why, as a homeopath, I will most likely give ten people with the same condition, say asthma, ten different remedies according to each person’s individual physical, mental and emotional symptoms, medical history, personality and how each person responds to their environment. Homeopathy uses different treatment to suit different people, matching the most appropriate medicine to each person.
Homeopathic medicines, called remedies, are highly diluted substances that are specially prepared at regulated homeopathic pharmacies. They are non-toxic, making them safe to use even in the very young or very old. There are over 3,000 homeopathic remedies. The remedies come from nature – mostly from plants, for example Arnica, a perennial herb. Some are from minerals, for example Silica which is made from pure flint, and then there are some from animal sources, for example Apis which is made from the sting of the honey bee. Homeopathy has a deep respect for nature, seeking not to harm the world around us, rather to learn from it. Homeopathic remedies are not tested on animals. I buy my remedies from Helios, a homeopathic pharmacy committed to producing remedies of the highest quality.
